From open source to
owned compute
We're the creators of PyTorch Lightning, the framework for training and finetuning AI models. William Falcon began developing it in 2015 at Columbia University and open sourced it in 2019 during his PhD at NYU and Facebook AI Research, guided by his advisors Kyunghyun Cho and Yann LeCun. In 2023, we launched Lightning AI Studio, a cloud platform for coding, training, and deploying AI models directly from the browser with zero setup.
Voltage Park was built to solve the other half of the problem: making large scale GPU compute accessible to all. Founded in 2023 and backed by the Navigation Fund, it bought its hardware outright with no debt or leasing, growing to more than 36,000 NVIDIA GPUs across seven Tier 3+ data centers in the US.
In 2026, we became one company. The result is a single platform that owns every layer, from the GPUs in our data centers to the frameworks and tools AI teams use to ship, with nothing rented, marked up, or bolted on in between.
Today, PyTorch Lightning has over 470M downloads, AI Studio supports 500K+ users across thousands of enterprises, and our fleet of 36,000+ GPUs runs across seven US data centers.
